Good news: there's no signup deadline to miss. Per the IRS, the election that opens a Trump Account can be filed at any time, and the fastest route takes about 5-10 minutes in your IRS Online Account.

Here's how the timing actually works and how to sign up. If you're still getting up to speed on the basics, here's what Trump Accounts actually are and how they work.

How to Sign Up

A parent or guardian makes a free election with the IRS, then activates the account in the official app. Here's the flow:

  1. Make the Form 4547 election. Fastest: your IRS Online Account, 5-10 minutes with an ID.me login plus your child's Social Security Number, date of birth, and address. You can also e-file the form with any tax return or mail it.
  2. Watch for the Treasury's activation email. It comes from no-reply@trumpaccounts.treasury.gov once the IRS processes the election.
  3. Download the official Trump Accounts app at trumpaccounts.gov to activate the account, link a bank or debit card, and make contributions.

The election is free, and eligible children get the $1,000 seed once it's processed. For a full walkthrough, see our step-by-step guide to opening a Trump Account.

What About the $1,000 Seed?

The $1,000 government seed is for U.S.-citizen children born between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2028. There's no separate claim deadline. Once you make the election, the seed is deposited after it's processed.

The only real cutoff in the program: the election has to be made by December 31 of the calendar year your child turns 17. For seed-eligible kids born 2025 through 2028, that's 2042 at the earliest.

What If Your Child Was Born After 2028?

Children born after December 31, 2028 can still open a Trump Account. They just don't receive the $1,000 government seed. They can still benefit from the tax-advantaged structure and family contributions up to $5,000 per year. That's still a meaningful head start. The Bottom Line

There's no deadline to stress about, and nobody has lost their spot. The program is live and open to all eligible families. The sooner you sign up, the sooner the money is invested, so do it when you have ten minutes free.
